This just seriously made me laugh out loud, and made me so proud to be friends with Zack Bolotin- the owner of Porchlight Coffee. My last job was the kind of environment that would not stand up for their employees, and we always had to work with the knowledge that if there was ever a complaint- we would be suspended, or even terminated. When talking to a manager about a particular complaint that had happened against me, and I tried to explain the situation he said, “it doesn’t matter what actually happened. What matters is that you made a customer upset.” UGH. From then on, I never felt safe in my job. They wanted us to take charge of conflicts and be problem solvers, yet if we were ever interpreted as not smiling enough or being too direct, we would get lectured and have shifts taken away. Anyone who complains at the place I used to work will get a free dinner/free something. It is just awful.
Basically, I am so glad I do not work in that kind of environment anymore, and I am glad that managers like Zack exist who trust their employees and believe in their ability do their job right.
