"You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film. … There is something very distorted about this reality that they’ve created, which is that it is OK to torture women on screen. Any kind of violence towards women in a sexual scenario is fine. But give a woman pleasure? No way. Not a chance. That’s pornography."

Patti Smith - Hey Joe (by djails)

“I thought of something I learned from reading Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas by Mari Sandoz. Crazy Horse believes that he will be victorious in battle, but if he stops to take spoils from the battlefield, he will be defeated. He tattoos lightning bolts on the ears of his horses so the sight of them will remind him of this as he rides. I tried to apply this lesson to the things at hand, careful not to take spoils that were not rightfully mine…” Patti Smith (Just Kids)

Untitled song

I wrote this last week and finally felt like I was able to put words to all of the anxiety/loneliness/unsettled feelings I’ve been having. It is so crazy how relieving it can be to write those feelings out, searching for the perfect words. Once the words are released I feel released from the pain too.

“I’ll sit here and watch you make the same mistakes I did.

I never meant it to end like this.

Never trust a person who doesn’t know,

who doesn’t know how to be alone.

They will wander from bed to bed,

until they make your head their home.

All I ever wanted for you was to feel content

in your own bones.

Here is a coat of armor,

don’t let anybody in.

Right now love is a game

that you do not want to win.

If you don’t believe me, go and see for yourself.

There is always room for more on the heart collector’s shelf.

They will take you,

they will take you away.

When you feel the cold,

and see the fog, you’ll know,

that you are still breathing-

your heart it keeps on beating.

Adjust your eyes to see in the dark,

we are alone in this together.

Alone is not forever.

Adjust your eyes to see in the dark,

we are alone in this together.

Alone is not forever. “

The customer is (not) always right. →

This just seriously made me laugh out loud, and made me so proud to be friends with Zack Bolotin- the owner of Porchlight Coffee. My last job was the kind of environment that would not stand up for their employees, and we always had to work with the knowledge that if there was ever a complaint- we would be suspended, or even terminated. When talking to a manager about a particular complaint that had happened against me, and I tried to explain the situation he said, “it doesn’t matter what actually happened. What matters is that you  made a customer upset.” UGH. From then on, I never felt safe in my job. They wanted us to take charge of conflicts and be problem solvers, yet if we were ever interpreted as not smiling enough or being too direct, we would get lectured and have shifts taken away. Anyone who complains at the place I used to work will get a free dinner/free something. It is just awful.

Basically, I am so glad I do not work in that kind of environment anymore, and I am glad that managers like Zack exist who trust their employees and believe in their ability do their job right.
